Junior heifers steal the show in Tullamore

A packed ringside of spectators watched as two junior champions went all the way in the Angus ring at the 2023 Tullamore show. Having come out of the strongest class of the day, Coolcran Violet later took the title of female champion before being tapped out by judge Shane McKiernan as overall Angus champion.

This stylish January 2022 born heifer was bred and exhibited by Grainne Horan from Ballina in Co Mayo. Sired by the herds former stockbull Rabawn Mighty V214, her breeding contains Nightingale El Paso, Mogeely Joe and Luddenmore Fionn. This marks the Mayo woman’s first overall championship win at the competition.

Standing second to Violet in the heifer class which had a total entry of 26 animals was Coneyisland Uptown Girl. This November 2021 born heifer was bred and exhibited by Niall and Brendan Regan from Castlerea in Co Roscommon. This young heifer is a daughter of Drumcrow Savoy with Bohey Jasper and Coneyisland Legend on the dam’s side. After standing second in the class to the champion, Uptown Girl followed her all the way to take the title of reserve female champion and reserve overall champion.

Taking top spot in the male section was the intermediate bull champion Lisduff Dream On X955 from Leo McEnroe, Virginia, Co Cavan. This two-year-old bull is a son of stock bull Liss Buster S621 and the homebred dam Lisduff Dream On S386. This bull later coupled with his pen mate to take top spot in the pairs class.

McKiernan picked his reserve male champion as Drumbeera Jay Z Y296 from Tommy and Patrick Beirne, Mohill Co Leitrim. Claiming first place in the junior bull class, this June 2023 born bull is sired by Caulry Nationwide and out of a Jerusalem Faraday bred cow.
