Liss herd makes it two from three in Tullamore

The Liss herd in Co Meath made it two overall championship wins in the last three years at this years Tullamore show. No mean feat, this topped an exceptional day for the father and son duo of John and Sean McEnroe.

Tasked with judging the Angus classes at this year’s show was Steven O’Kane who has brought out cattle of all breeds and judged at many shows across the UK. He selected his overall champion as the 10-month-old heifer Liss Minree Z285. This stylish young her is a daughter of AI bull Penguin Henry M503 and the homebred cow Liss Minree V916. Having come out of a strong class of autumn born heifer calves, Minree Z285 went on to claim the overall female championship before being tapped out supreme.

As highlighted, this topped an exceptional day for the McEnroe outfit who also left Tullamore with the reserve male championship. Securing this accolade was the February 2024 born bull calf Liss Mizer A328. Coming up trumps in the last class of the day, Mizer is a son of senior stock bull Lisduff Bang Bang and from the Mural line at Liss.

Pipping Mizer to the overall male championship was Clara WhatsApp from Dan and Rose Murphy, Co Cork. The youngest bull in the autumn bull class born just December 2023, WhatsApp is a son of the Canadian sire HF Alcatraz from the Donna line. This was far from the last of this young bull’s success as later in the day he went on to be tapped forward as reserve overall Angus champion also.

Taking the reserve female championship behind the overall champion was Clontead Mandy X363. Bred and exhibited by Eustace and Deirdre Burke, this powerful two-year-old first claver came out of an exceptional young cow and senior heifer class. Sired by Rawburn Boss Hogg, this heifer is no stranger to success having secured the overall champion at the 2022 National calf show. She was shown alongside her November born heifer calf.

The Burkes also came up trumps in the yearling heifer class with Clontead Lady Hotshot. This September 2022 born heifer is again sired by Rawburn Boss Hogg and placed top of the line at last year’s show also.

Taking the senior cow class was well known exhibitors Albert and Jennifer DeCogan with Mogeely Paula U587. This six-year-old cow is a daughter of former Tullamore champion Wedderlie Black Box J935 who was also exhibited by the Castlmartyr duo.

Their success didn’t stop there as the DeCogans also secured the senior male class with Corlismore Tomohawk. This four-year-old bull is the herds senior stock bull and has claimed dozens of overall championships at local shows throughout the summer.

In the heifer calf born in 2024 class, taking the red rosettes was Loughglass Athena from Noel and Lisa Dowd, Co Galway. This heifer was by Fordel lockdown and out of Mayo Maeve.

In a hotly contested intermediate bull class, the Lisduff herd of Leo McEnroe secured the top spot. Taking the top accolade was Lisduff Dino Y064, a July 2022 born bull sired by the herds senior stock bull Liss Minter S590.

Onto the junior bull class and the red rosette went home with the Barlow family for their rising two-year-old bull Gurtavoher Venice. This bull is a son of Clooncarne Pellet and Gurtavoher Naples.

The last class of the day was the pairs which was won by Tom Mulligan and family for their pair of spring born calves.

Massive congratulations to all exhibitors on an excellent show of quality stock. Also a massive thank you to our judge Steven O’Kane and all the team at Tullamore show for making such an event possible.
