Record average for 2026 Extravaganza

The Irish Aberdeen Angus Association returned to Thurles for its annual Extravaganza sale which entered its fifth year. Hosted the first weekend of October the sale will go down as one of the best yet with a record average price for females sitting at an impressive €4,910. This average was matched with a 93% clearance of a yard of predominantly young females.

The highest female price at the sale was broken on two occasions. First off and leading the sale at €12,400 was the only red animal forward in Luddenmore Red Lass V402. Bred and exhibited by Dr Michael Sheahan, Cappawhite this July 2025 born heifer attracted a flurry of bids before being secured by successful bidder James Higgins. Ranking five stars on a host of traits, this Lisduff Red Pepper daughter goes back to the Canadian Red Lass family.

Auctioneer Denis Barrett secured a bid of €9,800 for one of the last heifers through the ring, Haroldstown poppy B321. This December 2025 born heifer was bred and exhibited by Carlow based Laurence and Marie Farrell. Sired by HW Mr Equilibrium she is out of the two-year-old first calver Haroldstown Poppy Z297 who was a prominent feature on the show scene the past two years. This stylish young heifer was secured by Richard Moore for his herd in Northern Ireland.

The €8,600 price tag was hit on two occasions. First at the money was the much-fancied McClafferty Etta B122 from Charlie and High McClafferty, Co Donegal. This Clooncarne William daughter is out of Rathmooney Etta Y127 who was one of the high sellers at the 2023 Extravaganza sale. Etta boasted a host of top figures and was knocked down to new breeder Edward Buckley.

Matching the money was John Appelbes heifer Carrigroe Victoria B163. Possibly the first daughter offered for sale by Australian sire Warrawee Patrol, her dam is sired by Canadian bull HF Alcatraz. With every star possible within breed on the indexes, this in calf heifer heads back to west Cork to join Padraig Hurleys herd.

A small bull team seen prices top at €7,200 for Drumbeera Bob Marley B342. Bred and exhibited by Thomas and Patrick Beirne, this bull is no stranger to success claiming first place at both the National livestock show and the All-Ireland finals. The first son of Blelack Dean Martin offered at public auction in Ireland and was secured by Clive Richardson in Northern Ireland.
