Records smashed at Extravaganza 2024

The Irish Aberdeen Angus Associations Extravaganza sale took place on October 5th in Mid-Tipp Mart Thurles and smashed all records for the breed in Ireland.

Average soared to just shy of €5,000 with a near full clearance for the 50 pre-selected bulls and four choice bulls.

From the get-go the sale was on fire, however it was the last animal of the day which had spectators on the edge of their seat as prices soared to €27,800. This price was paid for the 11-month-old Mercury Red Evo Z910 who was bred by John and Shane Murphy, Banteer, Co Cork. This young bull was only shown once where he claimed the Munster club calf final and interbreed champion. Sired by imported stock bull McCornick paramount W768 he is out of Luddenmore Ellen Erica W442 and with two black parents offered a complete outcross for red breeders.

This price breaks a number of records, claiming highest Angus male price in Ireland as well as the highest Red Angus price in Europe!

Securing the sale topper was John Elliot of the Rawburn herd in the UK who purchased the young red bull in partnership with Angus House Farm in Romania.

In total the sale seen 13 animals exported to Northern Ireland, Scotland, Italy, Belgium and Romania which again strengthens the Extravaganzas reputation as not just the leading Angus sale in Ireland but one that’s recognised across Europe.

 

Leading the female prices at €9,000 was Lavally Lady J Carmel Y455 from the Mullooly family in Strokestown, Co Roscommon. This Keirsbeath Karma S539 sired heifer is out of the homebred Lavally Honey who is a full sister to the record priced Lavally Angie who sold for €31,000. This rising two-year-old sold in calf to Rawburn Poncho. Having won a host of championships throughout the summer, after spirited bidding she was knocked down to Leo McEnroe of the Lisduff herd.

This topped an exceptional day for the Mullooly family who also sold their second entry Lavally Willow at €6,000. This daughter of Kealkil Prime Lad is out of a Liss Brendan bred dam that goes back to Netherton Mr Radar. This January 2023 born heifer heads to Co Donegal.

New for 2024 Extravaganza was the ‘You Pick, We pay’ initiative. Here one lucky bidder would see their chosen lot completely paid for, so they were walking away with an animal completely free. Initiatives such as these are only possible due to the very generous support of all our sponsors. This year the Gold sponsor was again our loyal supporters Angus Beef Ireland while our silver sponsors were Dunmasc Genetics and Progressive Genetics/Munster Bovine.

The lucky number pulled out was lot number 3, Lisduff Baroness Y096.

Earlier in the day this heifer had sold to the Hickey family in Longford for €6,500! However as promised this heifer was given away completely FREE with the highest bidder paying nothing!

This marks the very first pedigree Aberdeen Angus female the family have introduced to their farm and what a way to start breeding!

Sired by Rawburn Earthquake, this five-star heifer was bred by Leo McEnroe of the Lisduff herd in Co Cavan.

This topped an exceptional day for the Cavan man who also sold his two other exhibits at €5,500 and €4,600 respectively.

Leading these prices was Lisduff Dandeline Z198. This September 2023 born heifer is sired by Liss Buster S621 and out of a Mogeely Josh bred dam. Ranking five stars on most traits she was knocked down to a Northern breeder. Her stablemate at €4,600 was the same way bred and heads to the same home.

Hitting the €6,000 price tag was Newbridge Red JSandy Z171 from Brendan McCawley, Co Leitrim. This rising two-year-old daughter of Red DMM Brylor Thrump is out of the homebred Newbridge Red Sandy and sold in calf and due in December to HW Red Lamborghini.

Matching this price tag was Kerins Wandamine from Bernard Kerins, Co Sligo. This daughter of Tonley Royal Legend is out of a Penguin Henry bred cow who goes back to the herd’s most successful line. She was knocked down to another Northern breeder.

Karol Connell old his very first Aberdeen Angus animal, Saoirois Winona of Newcastle for €5,200. This April 2023 born daughter of HW Farghal is out of the same dam that bred last years supreme All-Ireland champion Bellingham V Trish. This heifer was knocked down to the Ballykilroe herd in Co Westmeath.

John and Ann McDermott from Co Sligo sold four heifers at the sale to average €4,200. These prices were led with a call of €5,100 for Slieveanard Pretty Zena Z253. This January 2023 born heifer was sired by the aforementioned HW Farghal and out of a Cornamuckla Lord Hardy bred dam. Hitting €4,600 was Masreagh Patricia Z329, a daughter of Jadam Mattie U128. Mattie was also the sire behind Maseragh Rose Squidgy Z334 who also hit the mark at €4,600.

Hitting €5,000 was Rathmooney Eliza Z139 from Gabriel Hoey, Co Dublin. This stylish October 2023 born heifer is sired by Lisduff Duke V732 and out of Gigginstown Eclipse U853.

Ardglass Wendy was next in line when she sold for €4,800. She was bred by first time exhibitor Aidan Crowley, Co Cork and is a daughter of Intelagri Matteo with Bunlahy John G and Tonroe Udi in the back breeding.

Matching this price was the second highest price bull on the day Mogeely Frog Z918 from Albert and Jen DeCogan, Co Cork. This September 2023 born bull is a son of Keirsbeath karma and out of a homebred Wedderlie Oscalade daughter from the Flora line.
