It proved another highly successful day of Angus bull trading in Carrick-on-Shannon for the Midland and Western Livestock Improvements April sale. A strong clearance meant that 47 of the bulls present sold for an average of €3,450. Up substantially on recent years.
Leading trade with a call of €5,800 was Drumcarbin Pepsi Y380 from Shane McKiernan, Co Cavan. Sired by former champion Loughlynn Hum Dinger, this March 2022 born calf is out of a Duncanziemere Jet Set dam which was imported from England. Carrying five stars down the line he was knocked down to a local pedigree breeder.
Hot on his heels was Margaret McKiernan with Drumcrow Valentino who met his reserve at €5,700. This March born bull stood second to the sale topper in the pre-sale show. Sired by Rawburn Boss Hogg and out of a Drumcrow Joker bred dam, Valentino carried a replacement index of €205.

The McKiernan’s success continued as the overall champion on the day, Drumcrow Union, also came from this holding. This son of the aforementioned Joker hit the market at €5,400.
Piping the champion to the post by one bid were Ballina, Co Mayo, father and son duo Eunan and Conor Boyce, with the reserve champion, Quignalegan Usher. This five-star October 2021 born bull was sired by Mercury Royal Tinge and hit the market at €5,500.

Next in at €5,200 was Castle ultra from Alan Gibbons. This October 2021 born bull was a son of Kingsbrook Parker. Last to break the €5,000 mark was Laheens U Go ET from Cormac Duignan. This Bohey Jasper son sold for €5,100.
Taking the female championship on the day was Lakeshore Lady Jilly Y267. This super January 2023 born heifer was bred and exhibited by Patsy Smith, Cootehill, Co Cavan. Sired by Deelish Shotgun she met her reserve at €3,100.
Standing reserve female champion was Liscilvin Udella from local breeder Martin Garvey. This Carrigroe Kian calf sold for the top female price of €3,600.
