The bull, which was sold at 10 months old, is by the noted performance sire and Idvies stock bull Rawburn Rommel E423, is out of Netherallan Elba F057, who secured the top price at the Netherallan dispersal in 2007 selling for 8000gns at 10 months old. New half share owners are James and Bill Porter of the Old Glenort herd, Lisburn, Co Antrim, Northern Ireland. Speaking of his purchase James said: “The power and performance that Eclipse has, makes this bull very special indeed. With an actual recorded weight of 465kg at 202 days and 652kg at 300 days, he is a young bull that combines muscle, power and structural correctness with amazing bone, he will no doubt make a great impact on both herds.”

November 8th 2010 - NI Calf Show impresses Scottish judge

A tremendous show with a very high standard of entries in each class was how Scottish judge, Alistair Fraser, described the Northern Ireland Aberdeen-Angus Club’s 6th Annual Calf Show, held at the Pedigree Sales Arena, Moira.

Mr Fraser, who runs the 60-cows Idvies herd based at Forfar in Angus, said:”I’d like to thank the Northern Ireland club for inviting to me judge this great show. The cattle are a credit to the young showmen and women who have prepared and presented them in the show ring today.

“It has been a great show and I have thoroughly enjoyed myself. The classes were strong, and this event would rate highly with any of the Aberdeen-Angus shows in the United Kingdom.

The Matchett family from Birches, near Portadown, County Armagh, Nigel, Gail, Sarah and Sam, notched up a string of successes at the one-day show. Their accolades included the yearling heifer championship, the reserve heifer calf championship, the bull calf championship, the commercial championship and the pairs championship.

Pictured at the native breeds show and sale, Dungannon, are, from left: John Blackburn, vice chairman, NI Aberdeen Angus Club; Tom Noble, Lisbellaw, judge; and Aberdeen Angus Cattle Society council member, Alwyn Armour.

Trade was underpinned by dairy and suckler producers with the stronger, better fleshed bulls finding a ready market, while the plainer types proved harder to sell.

Topping the trade at 2800gns was the reserve male champion, Drumcorn Elbando J685, brought out by husband and wife team John and Ann Henning, Maghaberry, County Armagh. This April 2009-born entry was sired by the US easy calving trait leader and high performance bull, GT Triple Band. His multi-award winning dam, Drumcorn Elist D313, by Drumlister Cherry Boy, is bred from the herd’s foundation cow – Elcara of Drumlister, who attained more than 30 championships in her long show career.

Judge, Tom Noble, Lisbellaw, awarded the male championship to the March 2009-born Glenhoy Einar J134, exhibited by John and Avril Robson, Augher, County Tyrone. By the Hoff Limited Edition son, BJ’s No Limits 15S and out of Logie Ladymire F458, this bull attracted attention from many admirers around the sale ring, but failed to meet his reserve and was withdrawn unsold at 2800gns.

July 20th 2010 - All-Ireland Championships to take place at Mohill Show on 15 August

The Irish Aberdeen-Angus Association has announced details of the Growvite All-Ireland Championships which take place at the 83rd annual Mohill Agricultural Show on Sunday, August 15.

All-Ireland-7-web-use-350x276

Irish Aberdeen Angus Association president, Joe Keville, and sponsor, Brendan Crowe, Tullivin/Univet, with the All-Ireland Championship trophy.

The event was launched in the idyllic grounds of Lough Rynn Castle on the outskirts of the County Leitrim town.

Lough Rynn Castle is situated in a 300-acre estate dating back to the early 1800’s, and is the ancestral home of the Clements family. The third Earl of Leitrim, William Sydney Clements was known as Lord Leitrim, and he owned 96,000 acres of land throughout Ireland. The well-established restaurant is the ultimate fine dining experience, and its Table d’Hote and A la Carte menus boast dry aged Aberdeen Angus beef”. The hotel’s head chef is Jean Michel Chevet and one of his signature dishes is fillet of Aberdeen Angus beef served with gratin potatoes and seasonal vegetables.

“In 2009 we spent almost 230,000 Euro on Aberdeen Angus beef, “explained Clement Gaffney. “Our demand for beef grew by 28% in 2010, mainly due to the increase in the number of wedding receptions we hosted.

“Aberdeen Angus is our first choice because of its consistency and quality. We source all of our produce from the local area and surrounding counties. The Aberdeen Angus beef is supplied by Kettyle Foods from Lisnaskea, County Fermanagh. The meat is fully traceable from field to fork, and is dry aged to our specific requirements to enhance the flavour and tenderness. “Organisers of the All-Ireland Aberdeen Angus Championships met with sponsor, Brendan Crowe of Tullivin Laboratories/Univet Ireland Ltd, Cootehill, County Cavan, who has been sole sponsor of the competition for more than 20 years. Mr Crowe said:”We have had a long association with the All-Ireland Aberdeen Angus Championships, and we are delighted to announce our continued sponsorship of this year’s competition.

“The event attracts the cream of Aberdeen-Angus cattle from throughout Ireland, and we are looking forward to a big entry of cattle and a successful show. The site for Mohill Show is lovely and should provide an excellent venue for this prestigious competition.”

Judge for the event is former Aberdeen-Angus Cattle Society president, Neil Massie OBE, who runs the noted Blelack herd based at Dinnet, Aboyne, Aberdeenshire.  Mr Massie has had numerous Perth champions, and realised a herd record of 28,000gns for the 2004 supreme champion, Blelack Ellerman.

The prize fund exceeds 3,000 Euro, and the overall champion will receive a 250 Euro cash prize, a sash, an engraved Whiskey glass and the coveted All-Ireland Championship Cup, which is an exceptional piece of silverware dating back to 1902. The reserve champion will secure a 130 Euro cash prize.

Winners in each class will receive cash prizes ranging from 100 Euro for first prize, down to 20 Euro for fourth prize, as well as veterinary products provided by Tullivin/Univet. The schedule comprises of twelve classes, which includes two classes for young handlers – up to 17-years ago, and 17 to 25 years-old. Judging will commence at 11am.

Irish Aberdeen Angus Association president, Joe Keville, added: ”I would like to take this opportunity to thank Tullivin/Univet for its loyalty and generous sponsorship over the years. We look forward to welcoming everyone to the All-Ireland Aberdeen Angus Championships at Mohill on August 15, and we hope that it will be an enjoyable and successful event.”

Schedules for the All-Ireland Aberdeen Angus Championships are available from Irish Aberdeen Angus Association secretary, Kathryn Bradshaw on tel: (00353) 071 9632099 or email: irishaberdeenangus@eircom.net. Alternatively, contact Mohill Show secretary, Lourda McGowan on tel: (00353) 071 9631007. The closing date for entries is Thursday, August 5.

Their popularity as both terminal sires and producers of superior replacement females is second to none. We are confident that the Native Breeds Championships will become a firm favourite in the agricultural diary and would encourage breeder’s to plan to attend with stock.
